Bruce Gates, highlighted the freedoms of religion and speech, citing the controversial Supreme Court ruling that would allow members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church to continue protesting at the funerals of children and service members. Interested students were required to submit an application to the Kitty Hawk ATA along with an essay describing the First Amendment to the Constitution and discussing the importance of the Bill of Rights in the 21st century. Aycock High School, received $500 and will use it in her pharmaceutical studies at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. The second place winner, Courtney McGowan of Charles B. Stacie Gates of Eastern Wayne High School will apply her first-place winnings of $1,000 toward study in secondary education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C. The scholarship recipients were happy to benefit from the association's efforts. The increase is thanks, in part, to the group's fundraising success at the 2011 Wings Over Wayne air show and community open house held here in April. This marks the third consecutive year that the association has had funds available to grant as scholarships to local students headed off to college.Īdditionally, the Kitty Hawk ATA doubled its offerings from $750 in 2010 to $1,500 this award season. The Kitty Hawk chapter of the Airlift Tanker Association dished out a pocketful of cash to two deserving Wayne County seniors during a scholarship awards ceremony held here July 15.
